Hershberger Baskets

Lanesboro:
I ended up with the Peter Mooney over there because I need a triple, even if I loop around the backside of Church Hill to the more gradual slope.

Also, there is no grocery store in Lanesboro and the Mooney had a rack for baskets. These are a sample set I had left over from my time in the basket trade, which were never put on a bike. They really are a little large for the small rack. With them, theoretically a guy could make the 20 mile round trip to Preston for groceries. Theoretically. So far I've taken it on runs to the Lanesboro Pastry Shop down in the village and on one joy ride the five miles to Whalan for pie and ice cream. And back.

You can learn a lot about your  riding posture looking at the sit-bone depressions on an old Brooks.

Very nice bike, Gunnar. Love the CR pin on the saddle bag. How far to the liquor store? That's a more inspiring destination in my book. Send the green grocer an email and ask him to deliver.

Liquor store. That's tough. Lanesboro and the surrounding villages are very small and very isolated. 20 miles to a hardware store. 45 miles in three directions to the nearest big box store. And 45 miles to the nearest real liquor store. :-(

Sounds like Sweden. In that case call the liquor store and have them put your case of booze on the next bus heading to town. BTW, diaristwoman is going to her home town back in the old country. I've asked her to bring me back a bottle of Gammel Dansk and some Svenska Nubbar. Skol!

Those brake cables look like electrical conduit.
Bicycles that are more valuable than my net worth intimidate me.

Seeing that button reminds me I've got to go to Cirque next year! (My in-laws live in Leesburg!)

How heavy are those basket panniers? They look great on the Mooney.

@Old, I bought the frame cheap. It was all chrome and pitted. The bad parts are now under the paint. The paint was not cheap and godforbid the components weren't either.

The cable housing are vintage CLB aluminum with clear plastic covering and separate inner liners.

@Tony, Heavy. Maybe 3-4 pounds each. I've considered cutting a clearance hole for the brakes so I can move the baskets forward a few inches. There is also a matching front basket. But why?

@ George. when you get the Gammel Dansk, drink it. It doesn't keep well.

Yep you're right about Gammel Dansk. It tinkles out of solution it given the chance. But then I don't buy bottles just to look at 'em. Reason I know is from a bottle I was given after infidels were gifted a bottle, tasted it once and put it on the shelf unloved for a year before regifting it to moi. I drank it, precipitates and all, anyway...

Good looking ride.

I just ripped the leather closure strap on L's baskets right in half yesterday unloading a case of Hamm's.

Those wicker baskets look to be just about the right size for a nice bottle of wine, a baguette, some fine cheese and summer sausage.
