This is from the Mickey Newbury Triad Studio recordings, a collection of unreleased demo tapes, just Mickey, his guitar and Dale Bradley on cello. They are all his own material except this last one. Unedited tape filler. This is a pure, killer recording, one of those that would never get released because it's too raw and too long.

Haunting! I've thought often of making a mix CD with nothing but versions of "Summertime"--Billy Stewart, for sure. I'd definitely add this one. I like the way the guitar drives the song forward, as though it's going to open up into some epic story. I closed my eyes and imagined it playing over the opening credits to a film that I knew would satisfy my expectations.
