It's All Going to Hell!

Just when I think the world has completely gone to a Justin Bieber/Lady Gaga hell (*harrumph, harrumph*) a young man like Riley Baugus comes walkin' out of the hills and plays us a real song. And all is right with the world once more.

Damn!.... As I look at my 5 string banjo in the corner I feel so small. That was some rendition. I guess I'ed better get to work. Neil that guy is REALLY good. Truly a piece of Americana. Thank you.

I'm not necessarily convinced that Bieber/Gaga are the worst possible fate . . . I mean, they both seem pretty wholesome compared to most of the 60s trash I grew up on. This guy looks like he's had his share of grits. Nice.

Back in the mid sixties I had a 5 string I was learning to play. Then one night I saw a 14 year old boy sit in with Bill Monroe in Santa Monica. I traded the 5 string the next day for a Gibson acoustic which I still have. I never got very good at it either.

mw, Wholesome maybe. Talent is the issue.

Santa Monica? Where? ... I lived there 20 years.

45 year old memories.
I think it was McCabes but it could have been the "Ash Grove". McCabes had music some nights in a back room. I saw "Blood, Sweat and Tears" there. I was impressed.
I know I bought the guitar there. The more I think about it the more I think it was Ash Grove for Bill Monroe. I went there a lot too.
That 14 year old boy didn't just impress me. Bill Monroe was kind of cranky and I think he didn't want to have this guest player but I'm guessing he was doing a payback. When the boy started playing Bill smiled and stepped forward so he could watch. It was the only time I ever saw him smile.
Not that it is important but I like remembering it.

That sound about right. McCabes still exists. Ash Grove is toast. SanMo has changed radically...for the worst.
