Lanesboro Cottage

People buy second homes for different reasons. They buy them on golf courses, lakes and in the mountains. I'm outing this one now because all the purchase agreements, promises and disclaimers have finally been signed. We take possession on June 1. It's about four blocks from the village shops, cafes, and pubs - and also from the Root River Trail, a 75 mile paved bike path which links Lanesboro with seven other villages along the river.

It's a two bedroom with a walkout basement situated at the crest of a 20%+ grade hill.

Wadda I think? I think you're going to be riding uphill on the way home. Congratulations.

At the end of a long day I might be walking a bike up the hill, but's only a couple of blocks.

Well done Gunnar. It's nice to have an change of venue to escape to every now and then. My suggestion would be to hire a local kid with a mower so that dealing with the grass isn't the first thing you have to deal with after jumping out of the car. The key is to enjoy the place rather than strapping on another set of chores.

Yes, the pressure of the Growlery and the Lower Garden can sometimes be overwhelming.

Has anyone else noticed that kids don't mow lawns anymore. In general young people don't work. When I was a child we all worked - not necessarily backbreaking work in the mines, but starting at about 10 or 12 all young people worked.

OK.

With no disclaimer, freeballing, spitballing, tight rope: the latinos have taken over the child labor.

Make of that what you will.

It seems at point it became in poor taste to have your children work. Ar least around here there was a period of two or three decades when the kids had pretty much stopped working and before the Latinos came in to fill the void.

I prefer to think of it as a 40 Proof hill, instead of 20%. It's less intimidating.

(PS - 20P Jr. is mowing lawns for the neighbors this summer. I'd offer his services, but Lanesboro is a bit of a drive.)

I just got the name and number of a young man in Lanesboro who does lawns.

The 40 proof north approach may be out of my range at this point and weight in my life. The south approach isn't that far. Or I can become a pedestrian walking his bike.

Maybe the town needs to put in an electric rope tow for homeward bound cyclists--like they have for skiers. Sounds progressive!

One reason that many kids don't currently work for walking around money is that a lot of home owners are worried about liability. Jobs that kids could do aren't on offer the way they once were.

Hey! A kid could be hired to sell lift tickets on that cyclist rope tow--two birds with one stone.

Mr. Hope has an Axiom "The one with least keys wins". I have two. My house and car. Gunnar you are now on a losing streak. BTW where is the Growlery going to be.

I do like the bike path gig. Maybe you get special dispensation for that.

At this point I have 3 keys. 1410, the Growery, and we share a vehicle.

I view the second home as an investment, an investment that we can use.

Sweet! We almost moved to Lamesboro before settling here in the Circle! Enjoy your new adventure. It's located in a great spot.

Back before the trail was finished we looked at a similar house there. The walkout basement had been converted to an apartment with a nice young couple renting it. He took care of the place for the owner up here in the Cities for a rent reduction.

Seemed perfect. But back then we decided $26,000 would be a stretch for us. I assume property values there have gone up a bit :-)

Yeah, way, way up, then fell cut in half. Still waaaay above $26,000. :-(
