In Praise of Potlucks

In the circle of friends and relatives we socialize with, when someone is invited for a meal, the first response is, "What should we bring?". And a bottle of wine doesn't count; it is assumed. I suspect what killed the Christmas party (parties) this year is that somewhere along the line we lost the Potluck Spirit. Maybe next year.

What should we give up for Christmas this year.

For me Christmas tends to be an add-to rather than a depriving celebration. Really it's the celebration of the the days getting longer, the hope that a few pages deeper in the calendar Spring is in the offing. Give up? I guess I'll miss my daughter who's living on the warm side of the earth. No point in celebrating the Winter Solstice there.

My Ma always said if someone invites you over, you damn well better ring the doorbell with your elbow.
