Roses

Roses - so called because ..they are rose. I'm not much for hybrid teas. They do not play well with others in the mixed border. I think roses should be pink and old-fashioned, and ideally have a few thorns. The perfert rose should be just slightly double, loose and floppy ... and smell like a rose. Anyone who prefers large, fat blood-red tea roses is simply wrong and unrefined, and should go play in their own garden. ;-)  These are pictures of some of my climbers and shrub roses taken about a month ago.

One of my favorite outdoor spaces in New York is the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden. On its grounds is the Rose Garden, where something like 400 species of roses--many of them rare--are grown. When you look at them, you realize that the red rose guys give their wives and girlfriends for Valentine's Day are an aberration.

Snug Harbor used to be a home for retired seamen (many of whom were Norwegian). It's on a hill in Staten Island (not far from the ferry) with one of the best views of New York Harbor.

Snug Harbor. I love the name and what it conveys. There is a region in southeastern Minnesota called Chosen Valley. Wouldn't it be comforting to live in a chosen valley? I grew up in Clarks Grove, simply, The Grove. That name carries emotional weight for me. Or Gary Keillor's Prairie Home, which is actually a cemetery? Spend eternity resting in your Prairie Home.
