The Winter Olympics: Suggestions

I've been watching the Winter Olympics. Jeez, 6-0 after one period of hockey! It strikes me that there are a number of specialized "sports" that are considered medal worthy. One would think that they have found every obscure non-sport in the world. Nay. I would like to propose Synchronized Skating and Ice Fishing as trial sports. They cannot be sillier than what they're already awarding medals for. Maybe we could have both Modern Synchronized Skating and Classic Synchronized Skating and three or four variations of Ice Fishing - seated, standing, artificial and natural bait !

It's NBC that's silly. It has taken all the real winter sports, like the Nordic skiing events, curling, the biathlon, and 4-man bobsled, and shown them briefly during prime as curiousities, or covered them in depth in the wee hours of the morning. I'm suffering severe sleep depravation because of my obsession with Cheryl Bernard.

Next up, the classic boot hockey gold medal game.

A friend of mine from deep in the skating world told me that the skating competitions in the Olympics are generally political and rigged anyway. I assume she would know but she helped me understand why I couldn't tell the differences among most of the presentations. But you missed the dumbest move of all. Golf in the Olympics. Winter golf, now that might be promising. Dex

James,
Even the real sports are wacked. Nordic skiing: They have a bunch of different distances and team events, then throw in "Classic" skiing where they can't skate, they have to ski like we do. Then the Nordic combined, both a high hill and low hill. As a sometime skier all I want to know is who's the best skier, male and female, not pass out 96 Nordic skiing medals.

Well, just goes to show you -- our penchant for making sure every kid on the soccer team gets a trophy has spread to Nordic skiing.
