Paul braze-on Racer rears, Neo-Retro fronts, roller hangers were a gift from Chris Kulczycki. Mirror polished finish. Does anyone know what the cast gob near the end of straddle wires is for?
seriously . . see the concavity at the end of one of the arms on each brake? it fits there; there's a bolt to clamp on the other end of the wire to get the length of the straddle wire correct.
We have one bike with Paul Racers, one with brazed Mafac Racers, and two with Mafac style cantis. I just grab the pads, squeeze them to the rims and pop off the knob. It's the secondary gob that seems superfluous.
I like the cast gob on my Paul's. Instead of squeezing together both pads to disengage the straddle cable, I only need to push the pad on the side with the gob against the rim and I then disengage the wire. It may seem insignificant, but I've gotten used to it. In our current weather conditions, I clean the bike with the Paul canti's daily. I use that gob everyday. I think I'd miss it if it weren't there.
I yield to the opinion of the Crudmeister. (You may be surprised to learn that I get the squiggly red misspell lines under "Crudmeister", an obviously fine, descriptive word.)

On some brakes you will be glad they are there.

oh the secondary gob is just a grip to help grab the wire. I thought gob=barrel. Gob=grip.

Used MTB brake cables make fine straddle wires, and look better to boot, unless you like gobs.
