Giro d'Italia: Wouter Weylandt

Wouter Weylandt, of Leopard-Trek, died today in Stage 3 of the Giro d-Italia after falling very hard on a technical descent . It appears he died instantly. He was 26.

Tragic, yes, but I think any time a cyclist is killed when riding, no matter the circumstances (but usually involving a motor vehicle) it is tragic. I've had 3 friends killed and one maimed and a paraplegic. All of these riders were experienced and at the top of their game. Cycling is a dangerous activity; be it road racing, mountain biking, or riding in traffic. Not too many golfers get hit from behind by irate motorists or fall off the edge of a cliff at high speed.
