Crimson-collared Grosbeak

Got it at Frontera late this morning. That's all folks.

Celebrating what is very likely the last rare bird of the season. It wasn't an easy bird.

By the time we finally saw the bird and wrapped up our day in the field the temperature was in the high 90s. I hadn't eaten anything all day, but even with that heat I needed something in my stomach, so we stopped by the Blue Onion for lunch. And beer. The Devil's Backbone Belgian trappist tripel style went down nicely with my shrimp and feta salad. Apparently the owner, Eric Arndt liked our beer choices because he showed up unexpectedly at the table with a sampler rack, three nice ales and two of the house brews. We talked beer for a while, he left and we ate our salads.

Soon he returned with a Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge sour ale to share. I liked it a lot; Lorna not so much. You just cannot approach a sour ale like you would a regular beer. It's sour. And occasionally free.

Paul, I only bird for the celebration beer.

Stay cool - Gunnar

Well, I have to admit, you've been persistent down there in the valley. Do I know you?

I totally get the celebration beer. Very special beers, indeed. And as you know, celebrating can be simply acknowledging a good day of birding, or it can be in tribute to that Lifer.
